Heavier than Thou

from precious fallible gods by GREGORY

/

lyrics

“Don’t! That would be unwise.”
This is the church and this is the steeple
The pentacle of wealth and blame
Open the doors and lure all the people
And promise to explain

Framed by the portent of abject derision
My function is clear to behold
“So sayeth angelic machines…”
I will not relent thru insipid indecision
Or reiterate the histories of old
“They have many means…”
They hummed seraphim songs
By the caves at night
Awaiting their winged lovers

“Wait; Desensitize …”
This is the church and this is the steeple
Open the doors and lure all the people
Free us from pain, from love, and evil
And turn us not unto things so unbelievable

Spooky actions at a distance
A Force beyond our own resistance
Feel the lure of smooth insistence
Pulling us toward non-existence
“Entropy sucks…”

The crass consternation of truth fabrication
Will staunch believability
Lurid fascination of protracted indignation
Will haunt conceivability
Whatever will be will be
Or never ever be again
That much is certain
“But wait, there’s more…”

There burns a church and there a fallen steeple
Rotting in the ash of Gahanna’s Garden
There goes a witch and there goes a reaper
Golems on the walls again

Travesties to recreate
To help us get our souls whipped into shape
Would-be prophets speculate
On states that give God cause to hesitate

Oh… at last! You come full circle . . .
As in those last days
When we were so young
Apprehensions drifted away
As if we had never begun

Seared in the light of foreshadowing dreams
Fate is ruthless and seldom pleased
No ending could ever justify these means
And we are the sum of our deeds

“Too late, there is nothing more…”
I am the foundry, the forge of creation
The anvil of God at my knees
And look what I see:
All this I’ve done without a moment’s hesitation
As he hath done unto us as he pleased
But, alas, we are free in my sesquipedalian dream...
